We have so many rules in our lives . . . some being enforced by the systems we live in, and others we create for ourselves.
I think it’s time for a rules audit: where we inspect our personal and professional rules. What are the rules that are helping to make us more productive, or are they introducing unneeded complexity and potentially holding us back in some way?
As we’re quickly approaching mid-year, I thought the timing was right to share some thoughts on rules and hopefully surface new perspectives on what rules you might want to bend – or break.
Prompts to spark your rules audit:
What rules dictate how I’m spending my time?
Which ones make sense right now based on what I need to get done?
What are the rules that are potentially holding me (or my team/family/community) back?
Let me me know what rules you want to break, and what it will take to make it happen! I’d love for you to add your voice to this conversation . . .
If you find this helpful and want more support in your rules audit, let’s have a conversation about how we might partner through coaching or consulting.

oh, such a good question!! I realized that the more simple the rule, the fewer I can. So, right now, I have a no desserts rule. That is way easier for me to follow than, only desserts on special occasions and rice/bread 2-3x a week. With my no desserts rule (which I do for my pre-diabetes), it's simple and easy to follow. And I eat rice and bread as I need. I'm going to think about this more
I mean, I used to have a "1/2 a chocolate bar at at a time" rule, but since I turned 50 it's become "no less than 2 at a time" because life is short(er). I don't want to be like a friend's grandma who, when asked on her deathbed what she wished she'd done more of, listed every single chocolate bar she could think of. Nope, not gonna be me. Aside from that I've let go of some rules around posting on social media during the past year, and aside from reclaiming my time and energy, it's also helped me focus on the things that actually build my business (relationships and LinkedIn). Also, in the spirit of being GenX, RULES DON'T APPLY
