I made the decision to break-up with Meta last month, and it’s since become a regular topic of conversation with my friends, family, and larger communities. The response has been mixed – ranging from “right on!”, and “I respect that, but I’m staying”, to “I wish I could.” Overall, the larger theme is undoubtedly one of people wanting to leave these platforms but feeling bound to them.
I get it. Instagram was something I’ve gained so much joy from over the years, both as a personal and professional user. It gave me a conduit for connection, which was also true for my sporadic use of Facebook and WhatsApp. It also introduced me to new people, surfaced lots of great content, and provided exposure to a much larger audience for my work and podcast. But over the past few years, I experienced more downside than upside. Ultimately, a crucial aspect of my decision to leave came down to aligning personal and business practices with my values.
There are lots of reasons for leaving (and staying with) Meta. For most of us, it’s not a simple choice – especially if you’re a content creator. The bottom line: we each need to choose for ourselves. My goal in sharing my break up story is not to influence (or judge) others, but provide a glimpse into my experience and offer perspective.
These recent conversations (whether with people I know or new connections who responded to my social posts) made me realize many of you want to be part of the dialogue - to hear the stories from those of us navigating social media exits and transitions, ask questions, and share your experiences. To talk about the plans we’re creating, how we’re finding new digital homes, and our experiments to find the most effective ways to connect, share content, and cultivate community. And let’s not forget another important part of this conversation: how we’re working through our FOMO.
So here’s your chance to be part of the conversation . . .
